Custard Doughnuts Asda Funny Phone Call
It's Monday morning, I'm awake, and I've accepted reality - it's the start of the working week, but work hasn't quite yet begun and I need special something to change my mood.
Some might opt for toast or cereal, but I choose a controversial alternative; a jam doughnut. You put jam on your toast, how is a doughnut any different?
Made from dough, coated in sugar and a burst of your favourite jam inside, it's the perfect way to seize the day and alongside your morning coffee or tea, its ideal.

Admittedly, I don't tend to eat doughnuts for breakfast 7 days of the week but if the option's there, who am I to say no?
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not make it a happy one and ditch that sad-looking bowl of cereal or those beans on toast.
Jam doughnuts offer everything you need in your morning meal; yeast, jam and a sprinkle of sugar, all whilst leaving you with a smile on your face.

Of course, it's up-to-you if you want to venture one step further into the world of glazed doughnuts for breakfast - personally, I wouldn't recommend it as it's an overload with sugar and not as good as the classic jam-packed staple sweet treat.
Being a self-proclaimed 'doughnut connoisseur', I know all the ins and outs of what makes a good breakfast sweet treat and If its doughnut related in Swansea - chances are, I know about it.
However, with numerous supermarkets all having their own take on what is arguably one of your five a day (come on - the jam???) - some do it better than others and a few are better off avoiding.
Thousands of calories later, a sickly feeling in the stomach, a sugar rush and a near jam spill in the car - I have found the best supermarket doughnut.
Sainsbury's
'The King', as I like to describe it. When I get jam doughnuts in my weekly shop - 'Sains' is my go to as I have never found a supermarket treat that comes close to it.
Heading into the shop just shortly before 11am, I was eager to get myself a late breakfast which would help fuel me for the day. Their pricing of £1 for five is good value for money and enough to last a full working week - if you're ok with a slightly stale doughnut towards the end.
Biting into the soft, lightly sugar-coated snack - you get a sweet apple and raspberry Jam with every mouthful, ensuring you enjoy each bite.
Places to eat near where you live:
With most of the chain having their own bakeries, expectations are high and they certainly deliver on the jam doughnut front, the custard doughnut is questionable though.
A glance at the nutritional information, however, makes me regret what I've signed up to for this article, as 326 calories per single doughnut makes me realise even one-a-day may not be the healthiest or wisest idea.
I would inhale the contents of the bag in one sitting, easily.
Questioning my doughnut for breakfast philosophy, I continued my pursuit to find the best.

Aldi
Venturing not so far across the road to the recently opened Aldi supermarket in Parc Tawe, I wondered what lay ahead in terms of doughnuts as I rarely choose the store when doing my weekly shop.
What I found, was an outrage. No bakery and little choice when it comes to the best sweet treat money can buy.
No jam doughnuts of any kind were on offer at the store which left me disappointed as I tried to look through my steamed-up glasses - anyone who wears glasses with a mask can testify to that pain.
I decided to see what the ring doughnuts were like, if they could rival a classic jam doughnut even just a little - after-all they are a staple in America.
Mistakes were made though. The icing was pretty much what you paid for with a sickly taste as I struggled to eat it all, the dough or base felt more on the raw side.
I certainly wasn't a fan especially for 95p, but at least they tried.

Lidl
A hard hitter for lunch with its widespread bakery option but also a sweet treats paradise with its selection of pastries, bread and biscuits all prepared daily.
Powdered sugar and jam doughnuts were by far the most aesthetically pleasing to look at on the shelf.
The 35p for one or three for a £1 price point makes them the most expensive thus far but they did appear 'fat' and large which may have justified the price.
Biting into the doughnut leaves you covered in powdered sugar, or in my case, my car seats went from grey to white within seconds as other customers noticed a random 27-year-old feasting on doughnuts in the car park.
Sadly missed the mark with its jam to dough ratio though, and was severely lacking on taste when it came to the inside itself.
It needed a healthier dose of jam and more flavour to it, overall it felt pretty minimal.

Morrisons
I have heard great things about the Morrisons doughnut, expectations were high and any supermarket that has a bakery should do good options.
Approaching the bakery section, I was overwhelmed with doughnuts galore. Ringed doughnuts, jam doughnuts, mini doughnuts and even custard doughnuts (which is, once again, questionable).
Deciding to go for a raspberry filling over strawberry at a cost of just 69p for 5 of God's greatest creation - you can't go wrong with an absolute bargain.
Only 198 calories too, most likely the 'healthy' choice when it comes to the treat.
It was reasonable, a light fluffy doughnut with a tasty filling but I was left wanting more from the jam.
It wasn't as sweet as I would like it and I found myself not wanting to go back for more, never a good indicator.
I was impressed though, with it being my first try-out of the brand.

M&S
Specialists in food with their halls scattered across Wales, this branch had a bakery and cafe.
They are certainly not specialists in doughnuts though, with their minimal amount of jam within their dense snack, for the price of £1 - would definitely avoid.
I had high expectations opening the bright pink paper bag and inhaling a sweet aroma of the contents but it just seemed like a poor attempt.
Severely lacking on jam and with a dry dough, the only saving grace was the actual taste of the jam which was sweet but again it only left you wishing there was more of it.
Jam was also heavily on one side of the doughnut, leaving your mouth dry as you tried to devour the rest. It just lacked on all fronts; size, flavour, sugar, colour.
This certainly wouldn't make me happy If I were to have it for breakfast.

Tesco
Another supermarket brand that has dived deep into as many options as possible when it comes to its bakery and that was the case with the doughnuts.
Krispy Kreme, available in store, was an easy avoid - it's over-hyped, expensive and, I suspect, often sits in that container for far too long, not to mention there isn't a jam doughnut on offer - disappointing.
Elsewhere, shelves are fully stocked with ring, chocolate, iced, mini and even Berliner doughnuts - a German style that is often confused as a jam doughnut, as one reviewer mentioned when noticing a number of poor ratings on its website.
A four pack of jam doughnuts for 80p is very reasonable, but when opening the packet you discover the actual quality.
In what looks like it was made in a lab, three injected holes centrally in the doughnut show where the jam is located but leave the majority of the treat void.
The lightly-sugared snack is reasonable and the jam is fruity, but again, the ratio to dough is poor, there just simply is a better option out there.

Breakfast for the week sorted
So, my mission to find the best supermarket sweet treat is over.
Waking up tomorrow will be a sweet feeling, a nice cup of coffee to start the day alongside a jam doughnut.
After eating close to 2,500 calories and having struggled to keep down the last doughnut of the day, I've reflected on my decision to find the best supermarket treat and regretted it.
Sainsbury's is still king for me, however.
One man's jam toast is another man's jam doughnut. They are the same.
